Advancing The Sanctity Of Human Life On Capitol Hill

This Should Be As Evident in 2019 As It Was in 1965

Aug 21, 2019

Eight years before the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, the editors of Life Magazine recognized and documented life in the womb in the April 30, 1965 article, “Drama of Life Before Birth.”

In an unprecedented photographic feat for the 1960’s, Life Magazine used a specially built wide-angle lens and a tiny flash beam at the end of a surgical scope to document the stages of growth of an unborn baby from fertilization to 28 weeks. They were even able to obtain pictures of a living 15-week-old unborn baby.

In the section of the article detailing fertilization, the article states, “The birth of a human life really occurs at the moment the mother’s egg cell is fertilized by one of the father’s sperm cells.” In other words, life begins at conception.

Other studies and research briefs have affirmed this fact as well. For example, in 2014 a research brief published by the Charlotte Lozier Institute concluded in no uncertain terms: “The conclusion that human life begins at sperm-egg fusion is uncontested, objective, based on the universally accepted scientific method of distinguishing different cell types from each other and on ample scientific evidence (thousands of independent, peer-reviewed publications). Moreover, it is entirely independent of any ethical, moral, political, or religious view of human life or of human embryos.”

In addition, a five-year research study recently revealed that an overwhelming majority of biologists from 1,058 academic institutions confirm that “a human’s life begins at fertilization.” Of the 5,502 participating biologists, 5,212 affirmed this pro-life position.

It is clear that the question of when life begins, has long been settled. Yet, our nation remains in a battle for life and death. National Pro-Life Center continues to work diligently on Capitol Hill as an advocate for life, educating and challenging our representatives with the truth that was clearly affirmed by Life Magazine in 1965.
